The Romance Review

Massaged by a sexy man who can turn into a werewolf? Where is the appointment book?

In BIG BAD WOLF, Mr. Zachary delights the reader in a suspenseful whodunnit sleuthing. It's a delicious feel good book with friends, ex-lovers, drama queens and spooky possible paranormal activity.

Paavo Wolfe is a struggling independent bookstore owner catering to a specific genre - horror. It's slash films, campy horror flicks and scary thrillers all packaged with books and other paraphernalia, which makes the store so special. Unfortunately, there aren't many customs. It is one of those stores where people like me, werewolf and vampire lovers browse in our goth uniform.

Stacey is the next door owner of an independent lotion shop while Ben rents space from Stacey for massages. These three self-employed business owners are trying to make enough money to cover the bills. When a break in occurs in Paavo's shop and Stacey's worker, Sheila is stabbed, things get crazy. Paavo and his two friends, Stacey and Ben, are all pulled into an attempted murder mystery. Adding a large wolf attacking Ben at the crime scene, is this a case of supernatural proportions?

I'm a big fan of Scooby-Doo. I mention this cartoon because this book generates the same happy feeling. Paavo and his friends start to investigate who could have hurt Sheila. The way they find clues and end up with one plus one equaling three is amusing and endearing.

Mr. Zachary creates his characters will care. They are all unique and adorable. Their good intentions and loyalty is heartwarming. Paavo and friends come across more like Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby. To me, this is good because they are loveable and easily freaked out at times. To balance, there is a Fred type character represented by Paavo's ex-boyfriend who is a real cop. While there isn't a Velma character, the group of friends still works through their appealing camaraderie.

The author infuses suspense, a good plot and conflict as well as lovely characters in this enjoyable tale. The world he builds is easily understood in this contemporary setting. This book is recommended to readers who enjoy a good suspense with amateur detective work.
