The Talon of the Hawk Character Interview and Giveaway!

@jeffekennedy
Today I’d like to welcome special guest, Harlan from the Talon of the Hawk.  Harlan agreed to this once in a lifetime interview. We also have a giveaway for a copy of The Talon of the Hawk.  Enter by June 12 11:59 PM USA Eastern Time.  This is open to US and Canada only.

La Crimson Femme: When you first entered into the contract with the High King, what did you think of King Uorsin?

Harlan: It’s not my job to have opinions about my clients. It was a good job and my contracts are tight. It’s up to a King like Uorsin to decide how he wants to run his realm. I simply follow orders—as long as they don’t run counter to the contract. That said, it rapidly became clear that the High King was not entirely stable and I became concerned about how events would resolve.

La Crimson Femme: What is something Ursula does that you think is sweet that no one else knows?

Harlan: Ursula is sweet. She’s actually very tender-hearted and simply doesn’t let many people see it. Some of the most sensitive people are the most protected, because the world affects them so profoundly. Everytime she lets me see what’s in her heart, that’s her sweetness.

La Crimson Femme: You mentioned you left home because you there was nothing there for you.  You mentioned a long story; would you be able to share now?

Harlan: No. It’s in the past and should stay there.

La Crimson Femme: How many children do you want with Ursula and does she know?

Harlan: I would love children with Ursula—as many as she’d like. I’m also fine if she doesn’t care to. But yes, she knows, and we discuss it from time to time.

La Crimson Femme: What is something you’d like to do with Ursula that you haven’t done before?

Harlan: Ursula rarely takes time to relax and have fun. I’d like to do things that get her to stop thinking and just enjoy.

La Crimson Femme: If you were going to surprise Ursula with something, what would it be?

Harlan: I have a birthday picnic planned. I think she’s forgotten she told me that story. It will be interesting to see how she reacts.

La Crimson Femme: Now that you’ve met her two sisters, what do you think of Ami and Andi?

Harlan: They are all remarkable women, each fierce in her own way. I haven’t known other women like them, so committed to their roles in the world and so radiant with the magic that runs in their blood. Andi is a powerful sorceress and sees much with her knowing gaze. She’s been a great asset to Ursula. Ami is, of course, lovely—but there’s so much more to her than that. She brings a great deal of love into the family and there’s strength in that.

La Crimson Femme: With the constant rejection from Ursula, how did you keep on going and keep after her?  She broke your heart a couple of times.  Do you make her pay like Andi pays her husband?

Harlan: There was never a question of whether or not I’d stay true to her. The Elskastholrr is personal to me, my own promise. It didn’t matter if Ursula rejected me or did her best to drive me away. That’s the power of that vow, to give yourself to someone whether they want you or not. Also, I understood why she felt she needed to hold me away, particularly after I knew all she’d been through. I couldn’t ask her to pay for doing what she most needed to do. Finally, I’m a patient and stubborn man. I knew I’d wear her down eventually.

La Crimson Femme: As Ursula’s lover, what is the biggest challenge you face?

Harlan: Making sure she finds joy in our being together and that the ghosts of the past don’t poison her pleasure or make her turn away from me. I’m also bigger than she is, so I’m careful in how I used my strength and weight.

La Crimson Femme: What are the chances of you returning home or your family coming to visit you?

Harlan: I will never return to Dasnaria and it’s so unlikely as to be impossible that any of my brothers would make their way to Ursula’s realm.

If there is anything else Jeffe would like to provide as information, feel free to provide it and I’ll create a question to it.

Jeffe: *whispering* behind Harlan’s back. I’m writing Dafne’s book and let me say that Harlan is mistaken on that last answer. And some of his past will out.
