Review: What Doesn't Kill Her

What Doesn't Kill Her by Christina Dodd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Heart beating, adrenaline rushing suspense, keeping a reader on the edge of their seat. Full disclosure, I did not read the first book in this series. After reading this one, I am now going back to purchase the first book to read. I loved this from the very start. Kellen is a take no prisoner woman who may have lost some of her memories, but that doesn't make her any less lethal.

I have been a fan of Ms. Dodd's for decades. Her romantic suspense is consistently thrilling and exciting to read. This new series delivers all this and more. It has been years since I last read a Ms. Dodd book. Her writing is even better than I remembered. The plot in this story is well written. The flow is smooth and attention grabbing. Before, I remember her book focused more on the romance between the heroine and the alpha male. This book is focused on the character development as well as plot movement. I enjoy plot driven books …

Review: Consumed

Consumed by J.R. Ward
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

New series by talented Ms. Ward starts off as a slow burn. This tale is action packed yet leaves a reader a bit disengaged. For those who enjoyed the movie, Backdraft, this story may appeal to you.  The story starts off fast paced with a heart pounding fire. Fire fighters Anne Ashburn and Danny McGuire are adrenaline junkies who live to tame fire. Their dare devil attitude and not following standard safety protocol one too many times ends Anne's career as a fire fighter.

I struggled with this story. It is because I didn't like the characters. Anne is a self-centered woman who lack maturity. Her interactions with her older brother and mother are irritating and disappointing. It was hard to feel anything for her as she treated these people who love her so badly. She is a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum because Daddy didn't love her enough. Her daddy issues carry through the entire book and I cared not a wit to be stuck in…

Review: Nightchaser

Nightchaser by Amanda Bouchet
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Space opera lovers, this is a great new series to pick up. New to me author, Ms. Bouchet lures me into her complex world with vivid imagery and complicated intrigue. Those who loved the League series by Ms. Kenyon, this will be a hot new series to follow! After reading this first book, I want the next one to come out quickly.

This story reminds me a little bit of Serenity aka Firefly by Joss Whedon with Tess as the rebel pilot. She lives day by day trying to procure what is needed to help those who suffer under The Overseer. Her last job lands her in hot water and she has the Dark Watch on her tail. Immediately the reader is led on a fast paced cops and robbers chase with us rooting for the robber. What Tess learns about the latest hit is worse than she thought. Everything she tried to hide and keep in the past is all coming out into the open. This book is rich and compact with non-stop action. A lot happens in a short span of time…

Review: Dark Alpha's Awakening

Dark Alpha's Awakening by Donna Grant
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

No one escapes Death, even when they try to steal her power. This book is fantastic! The Reapers lead by Erith have been mysterious and lethal. Just the kind of sexy dangerous which lures an adrenal junkie in! This final showdown between Death aka Erith and Bran is a long time coming.

The focus of this book is battling Bran, Death's first reaper who is wreaking havoc. There is so much more in this book. Ms. Grant weaves a rich tale of jealousy, betrayal, rage, sacrifice and loyalty. It is an epic fantasy tied together with love.

Cael is a fae warrior whom Erith sees years before her first reaper creation. His loyalty, intellect and dedication is what captures her attention. Watching him over the centuries she grows more and more fond of him, even after she's created her reapers. Cael's addition to the group is late in coming which is a good thing in that he was not betrayed until very late. A bad thing bec…

Title: Twisted
Author: Natasha Knight
Genre: Dark Romance Standalone
Release Date: February 19, 2019

My brother was right. I always wanted my own Willow Girl. What happened on that island didn’t break me.
It twisted me.
Corrupted me.
Made me into a monster.

Although, I guess it’s true what she says. You can’t become something that wasn’t inside you all along.
This was always going to happen. I was always going to take Amelia Willow.
History and destiny sealed her fate. Sealed both of ours.

For months, I’ve been waiting. Watching.

And tonight, everything will change. Because tonight, I’ll collect my own Willow Girl.

Author’s Note: Twisted is a standalone spinoff of the Dark Legacy Duet. No cliffhanger!

Review: Twisted

Twisted by Natasha Knight
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Following on the heels of the tormented erotica duet series Dark Legacy, this features the unwanted "spare" Gregory Scafoni. For those who have not read the Dark Legacy series, this story will feel a bit incomplete, as if the reader is missing a piece to the puzzle. Whilst this can be read as a standalone, it is not advisable.

This tale flips between two different perspectives - Amelia and Gregory. Their families have been tied for generations and it's puzzling for me because if they are tied, would this not lead into inbreeding or is it the women are offered up as sexual slaves and then tossed aside. This is never explained in this book which leads me back to the recommendation of reading the Dark Legacy Duet first. This pondering aside, this story is trademark dub-con from Ms. Knight.

Amelia is a conflicted girl who at times come across a petulant. Her love for her sister Helena is complicated and shows throughout the …

Review: Blood Bond

Blood Bond by Shannon K. Butcher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Diving into a well-established series is difficult at times to orient oneself. However, BLOOD BOND, Ms. Butcher's 10th book in the series, is surprisingly easy to acclimate into from the very beginning. Highlights from previous stories are provided in a quick summary form, well integrated into the scenes. The world building seems to be a continuous expanding one as the reader learns more about the different worlds. There are some big reveals in this story which leads me to believe the previous books in the series may have been slowly building up to these big reveals. I enjoyed the instant gratification. This book can be read as a standalone, but it is recommended to read the previous books first.

The characters in this story are easy to like. Justice is a lone ranger who does what she's commanded. She never knows when she will be forced to take action. After years of this, she is numb to it and knows better than to resis…
