Review: Her Ladyship's Curse

Her Ladyship's Curse by Lynn Viehl

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

With a tag including Steampunk, one would expect a bit more steampunk incorporated into this story. Instead, it's more urban fantasy on a retold timeline. The steampunk in this tale is quite light. Still, the novel is interesting and I enjoy how history is designed with Great Britain, or the "Crown" winning instead of Washington.

Kit is a magical null. Magic doesn't work around her which is why she believes all mages to be thieving scam artist. This world Ms. Viehl created is intriguing. It parallels the colonies in the US in many ways. This interpretation is a bit darker. Or perhaps the real history books have white washed it so that in comparison, Ms. Viehl's world seems more sinister.

The characters in this book are engaging. Kit is a character I enjoy. She is spunky and she keeps the most intriguing of friends. Her loyal friends are pretty amazing and it's nice to see a strong fem…

Review: Compromised

Compromised by Ethan Stone

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Ready for some prison gang rape fantasies? This tale is definitely not about prison m/m non-con sex nor is it about graphic heterosexual male rape. Don't despair, this story is great without either. It's not that kind of prison book despite the insinuating title.

Daniel "Kash" Kashaveroff is a corrections officer for a prison. He's a closet gay male because even though there should be no discrimination, the real world doesn't function on hypothetical theories.

Kash is experiencing a mini-midlife crisis. Does he really want to remain as a corrections officer? It's not a career choice for him. It pays the bills. When his personal life crosses over into his work, there are some serious ramifications. There is a strict code of conduct for fraternization between prison guard and prisoner. This is where the compromise comes in.

Mr. Stone is a new to me author who kept me riveted to this story. He crafts a solid…

Review: The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo

The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrelyn Sparks

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Returning back to the world of bleer and blissky, this one intrigued me because of the Chinese element. Leah Chin is a geneticist specialist brought into the world of paranormal. She's here to solve the mystery of the humans with vampire strength. How is this happening? Apparently, a demon is responsible. From the land of science and logic, Leah is thrown into a chaotic world of vampires, were-animals, angels & demons. Oh my!

Leah doesn't take it so well. Yet she does find herself attracted to the quiet and melancholy vampire, Dougal. This Scotman prefers his past to stay in ancient history. When he meets Leah, his past comes rushing back like a tidal wave.

This story is sweet. Ms. Sparks follows her consistent formula of an alpha male with a tortured past. He's redeemed by the true love of a woman. There is always some flaw with this women. In Leah's case, she's socially…

Review: Bound as the World Burns

Bound as the World Burns by J.E. Keep

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Sting (Kink) Rating: ★✰✰✰✰
Story Review Rating: 2 Paddles

The world is in chaos and Cassidy could not be more unprepared. She is an eighteen year old who has nothing going for her except her virginity and sweet demeanor. She sheltered and timid as she is left behind in a bomb shelter.

This world building is very sketchy. With Cassidy stuck in an isolated location, there is little information about what happened. There is no information about what exactly is hunting outside or causing metal bending scrapes on the bunker doors. This leaves the story feeling unfinished. The ending of the book isn't an ending, it merely a cut-off thought. It's a bit frustrating because it leads the reader to think perhaps there is more. If this is a serial story, it would make sense. If this is a standalone, then the story review rating may need to drop another star. This lack of conclusion in a tale is annoying.

Review: Truth Be Told

Truth Be Told by Tamsin Baker

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Living in the closet adds stress for the corporate lawyer, Patrick. The past ten years he's been avoiding every woman his family pushes him towards. He yearns to be with a man and he finally finds his match at a bar. Liam is happily out and running a gay nightclub. Their hook up morphs into several months of sexual bliss.

The conflict in this story is altogether too realistic for many men who find themselves trapped by societal views on homosexuality. Ms. Baker does a good job of showing how those who have to hide their personal life or try to keep it separate only end up hurting their loved one. A lot of it has to do with the current trend of vomiting all personal details for every Dick, Tom and Harry to hear - whether they want to or not. The resolution of this conflict is too easy and a bit unrealistic. If only every obstacle is so easy to overcome.

The characters in this story are uncomplicated. They are easy to …

Review: Cake

Cake by Lauren Dane

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Cake is utterly charming and deliciously sweet. Ms. Dane crafts yet another wonderful romance between a superstar and a common person. Gregori is a well-known artist while Wren is an art student. As many famous people's life become, Gregori's is filled with fast women, groupies and bad choices. Wren is a breath of fresh air.

The slow sensual dance between Wren and Gregori is as effervescent as the champagne they both enjoy. Ms. Dane incorporates sultry scenes to help Gregori's artistic block. Perhaps Wren is his muse and her sexual energy blasts through his walls. It does break through the walls he erected around his heart.

The conflict in this story could be the usual manipulative and exhausting game playing which induces boredom for readers. Instead, Ms. Dane opts for a mature move which will delight most readers. Wren is an independent modern woman. She knows what she wants and works to achieve it. This is never s…

Review: The Unchained Slave

The Unchained Slave by Jack Brighton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Looking to walk on the smexy wild side? The plot your destination to Mr. Brighton's Wild Side stories. In this fuckfest, there is a little bit of everything for your spanking pleasure. This is a fun smexy story about a twink, Dylan. Spoiled privileged rich kid Dylan is furious with his father. His father had the gall to lose money and stop funding Dylan's life of leisure.

Dylan's sulky self whines to a favoured History teacher. After shutting Dylan by sticking a cock into his annoying pie hole, the teacher tells him about the Wild Side as a possible job opportunity. Dylan is definitely a lucky whore. He easily sells his asshole, cock and mouth for the easy living. Dylan's definitely picked up a ticket on the gravy train. He also pulls a train so it all works out. Can you tell I can't stand Dylan? His life is to easy and good. So forget about this dunce, instead focus on the m/m graphic dirty s…

Review: The Hypnotist

The Hypnotist by Sabrina Jen Mountford

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Looking for some material to add to the spank bank? Search no further. Ms. Mountford pens a deliciously depraved tale of non-con sissification. Alex is a bit of a lazy asshole. He smokes incessantly and is a terrible selfish lover. Denise is tired of him. She wants to change her boyfriend back to the exuberant pussy licking fun guy. Plus, she wants to get her "freak" on in the bedroom. Alex is surprisingly resistant and quite the fuddy duddy. He's pretty much a loser all around. Denise's frustration leads her to her buddy Dr. Eve to help with some hypnotic suggestions.

Ms. Mountford cranks up the heat as she throws in some hawt fetishes. The unwilling change from inconsiderate asshole to pussy whipped sissy is delightfully funny. The domination of Alex is superb. His confusion and push to fight is conditioning is fun to watch. Particularly amusing is his humiliation. This story tends to b…

Review: The Red Plague Affair

The Red Plague Affair by Lilith Saintcrow

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A mysterious disease released as a contiguous bioweapon of mass destruction is a theme becoming more popular. Ms. Saintcrow makes it her own with twists and plot turns. This story once again showcases Ms. Saintcrow's creativity. The reader returns to the Steampunk world of Sorceress Prima Emma Bannon and mentath Archibald Clare.

This is a complex story with many layers and characters with conflicting priorities. The end result is betrayal, death and broken loyalties. This story is not intended as fluffy mind candy. It's not the easiest read for average readers. First, the world built in the prior book must be fully understood as a foundation to comprehend the references in this book. Second, the reader must be able to use context clues to decipher words which don't exist in the English language. No dictionary is supplied. Third, a basic understanding of Britain's class system from the Victorian …

Review: Serving Him: Sexy Stories of Submission

Serving Him: Sexy Stories of Submission by Rachel Kramer Bussel

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Serving Him definitely delivers in the sexy stories of submission. This collection of twenty-one maledom tidbits is smoking hawt! It's an erotic feast designed to satiate horny submissive females. The kinks involved span from light spanking to intense breathplay. Including orgasm control gives the book an added sharp edge.

Most of the stories in here are well written with explicit sex scenes. The erotic pairings with a male dominant and female submissive is particularly appealing. Several of the stories involve tantalizing threesomes. One of them involves a mouthwatering M/F/f. For kinisters who enjoy it all, this is a collection to read. There are five standout tales in this compilation.

Lovers of ageplay will enjoy In I Always Do by Kiki DeLovely and Subbing by Rachel Kramer Bussel. Both contain the taboo theme of Daddy and little girl. DeLovely and Bussel come at it from differen…

Review: Leather+Lace

Leather+Lace by A.B. Gayle

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How is it possible to hate a character who never shows can generate such a high degree of loathing? Julius, Stevie's ex-partner is an asshole. Of course, he isn't in the book to defend himself but really, from Stevie's point of view, it's horrific. Stevie represents the abused spouse locked in the house and isolated from friends and family. Mixed in with a BDSM M/s relationship, Stevie was screwed all around. Even though he enjoyed the kink, the M/s situation was poisonous. Even four years after his crazy escape from Julius and years of therapy, Stevie is still messed up in the head.

Ms. Gayle does a great job of teaching BDSM, specifically the D/s side of it to readers. She compares and contrasts between BDSM romanticized in fictional erotic novels and living in the lifestyle. She does a marvelous job at it too. I'm impressed with how she presents the psychology of it. She also spent a good time showing …

Review: Gilded Lily

Gilded Lily by Pauline Allan

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A sexual fantasy so taboo that Lily's fiancé repudiates her and breaks off the wedding plans. What could it be? Lily's sexual desires must be off the wall kinky. Or maybe not.

Lily is a reclusive Southern belle living on a family estate. It seems she is the only one left in her family. She's been a submissive to a Dom, Tony. The past three years, she's grown under his sexual submissive training and blossomed. Two years ago, she expanded her sexual repertoire to include F/f delights with Tony's girlfriend, Renee.

This story is a slow journey to expose Lily's fear of rejection as well as her need for a fulltime Dom. The description of the location is vivid. It's easy to imagine this gorgeous home with the beautiful landscaping. The BDSM scenes are sultry, perfect for the steamy Southern climate. The dampness between the reader's legs caused by arousal can easily rival the humidity of Lily's home sta…

Review: The Submission of a Mafia Princess

The Submission of a Mafia Princess by Sandra Bunino

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

My personal rating for this is a 2 star. This is because the story is just okay for me. Based on the review site, their review rating will look different based on their measurements.

Sting (Kink) Rating: ★★★✰✰
Story Review Rating: 3 Paddles

Lovers reunite in a BDSM club unexpectedly. Braxton Malone never forgot a lover who nearly killed him. Dating a mafia boss's daughter is always risky because one never knows if "Daddy" will take exception. Some people joke about a father showing a gun to a prospective boyfriend to protect their daughter's virtue. Brax learned the hard way that some fathers will do more than just brandish a weapon. Antonietta is the well-known daughter of a New York mob boss. She takes a chance with Brax and it ends horribly.

The plot is predictable and uses a plot device I'm not fond of - deus ex machina. The conflict is a bit contrived with Antonietta &quo…

Review: Big Bad Wolf

Big Bad Wolf by Logan Zachary

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Massaged by a sexy man who can turn into a werewolf? Where is the appointment book?

In BIG BAD WOLF, Mr. Zachary delights the reader in a suspenseful whodunnit sleuthing. It's a delicious feel good book with friends, ex-lovers, drama queens and spooky possible paranormal activity.

Paavo Wolfe is a struggling independent bookstore owner catering to a specific genre - horror. It's slash films, campy horror flicks and scary thrillers all packaged with books and other paraphernalia, which makes the store so special. Unfortunately, there aren't many customs. It is one of those stores where people like me, werewolf and vampire lovers browse in our goth uniform.

Stacey is the next door owner of an independent lotion shop while Ben rents space from Stacey for massages. These three self-employed business owners are trying to make enough money to cover the bills. When a break in occurs in Paavo's shop and Stacey's worker,…

Review: Catch a Ghost

Catch a Ghost by S.E. Jakes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Men with issues who bury them deep must be a requirement for former military bad ass men. It appears Extreme Escapes only hires these kind of intense messed up men. This company is able to work outside of USA law enforcement and military rules. They take the jobs which are off the books. One of the most tenure employees of Extreme Escapes is former Navy Seal, Prophet. He is a man who is in deep denial. His impending medical condition is something he completely ignores. He treats his body without care as he completes each mission. Due to his past, Prophet refuses to work with a partner. Tom Boudreaux is new to Extreme Escapes and paired up with Prophet. Tom's mental trauma is of a paranormal bent. Is he a male Cassandra?

Ms. Jakes creates characters who are so conflicted. She builds their history layer by layer and each one is bitter and pain filled. I personally love the hero who has been beaten down to where they …

Review: Back in Bliss

Back in Bliss by Sophie Oak

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest
Nobody does it half as good as you
Baby, you're the best

Is it a bit creepy that I feel this way about an author? Perhaps. Ms. Oak pulls me out of another reading funk. I really loved this story. I've been waiting to see how Logan survives horrendous torture by Russian mafia and moves on. The sweet boy went from gently cruising through life to crash and burn. And boy did he burn - drinking, whoring, drugs...I felt badly for Logan. How does a person recover from three hours of bodily torture through beatings, burns, staples, slicing and... I never figured it out. Did he get reamed in the ass repeatedly? It's possible. It wasn't exactly clear to me.

In this book, we finally meet Logan's "brother in arms", Seth. Seth is like Julian and Stef. Where do all these alpha males come from? I swear, one of the reasons why I love Ms. Oak's stories so …

Review: Shameful Reckonings

Shameful Reckonings by S.J. Lewis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It isn't often Mr. Lewis does non-con. This is one of his earlier works which he brought together into one book. Both of the story themes hit my kinks - very well. Mr. Lewis is one of the gentlest male writers when it comes to BDSM fantasy capture slavery. He goes pretty easy on the women. I think this shows a sensitivity and true enjoyment of women in real life for him. Often times when men write non-con, they are cruel sadistic bastards to the women. They make the women rather vapid and easily broken. Mr. Lewis does it a little different.

In Giancarla, a trophy wife makes a big mistake. She's been stepping out on her husband and she's been caught. What he does to her is right up my alley. Giancarla is sent to a sex slavery ring to be trained and sold as slave Gia. The scenes in here are arousing if a bit mild. I was hoping for a lot more graphic humiliation and demoralization of this naughty housewife…

Fall into Romance Blog Hop!

Welcome The Romance Review's Fall into Romance Blog Hop!

The blog runs from September 13 through the 21st, nine days.  I'm highlighting a few books I've recently read and highly recommend.

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My review: here

When I want a good paranormal romance, I know I can count on Ms. Singh.  Her latest book kicks off the end game.  Will the three worlds of humans, changelings and psy co-exist peacefully, or will one be wiped out?  Even at book twelve, Ms. Singh keeps it fresh.  The reveal isn't a surprise, but the events is what is surprising and enjoyable.

The Mistress by Tiffany Reisz

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My review: here

For authentic edgeplay BDSM scenes, Ms. Reisz is the go-to author.  Her books are highly intellectual with erotic scenes and complex plot.  She is the author to watch.

Finding Master Right by L.A. Witt
