Review: Nightchaser
Nightchaser by Amanda Bouchet
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Space opera lovers, this is a great new series to pick up. New to me author, Ms. Bouchet lures me into her complex world with vivid imagery and complicated intrigue. Those who loved the League series by Ms. Kenyon, this will be a hot new series to follow! After reading this first book, I want the next one to come out quickly.
This story reminds me a little bit of Serenity aka Firefly by Joss Whedon with Tess as the rebel pilot. She lives day by day trying to procure what is needed to help those who suffer under The Overseer. Her last job lands her in hot water and she has the Dark Watch on her tail. Immediately the reader is led on a fast paced cops and robbers chase with us rooting for the robber. What Tess learns about the latest hit is worse than she thought. Everything she tried to hide and keep in the past is all coming out into the open. This book is rich and compact with non-stop action. A lot happens in a short span of time. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of reveals to keep this storying engaging. And with each new piece of information, more questions arise as the picture to this world becomes more and more expansive.
From a world building perspective, I love it. It is a comfortable and familiar world I understand and eagerly look to find in books. It is a genre that not many female writers delve into. This story is more space opera than romance which I also liked. There is a bit of love interest between Tess and mysterious Shade Ganavan. Fortunately it does not overshadow the main plot - which is who is Tess and where did she originally come from. I am riveted and want to learn more. This book is definitely a page turner for me. I'm hooked and eagerly anticipate the next book in the series. This space opera is highly recommended to sci-fi lovers who root for the underdog.
