Review: Umbra's Shadow

Umbra's Shadow by Andrea Stanet
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Exciting and fast paced, Umbra's Shadow casts a bright light on new to me author, Ms. Stanet. Unsure of what to expect, the blurb to this story sounded intriguing. The story captured my attention within the first scene. Merc is a shapeshifter who goes her own way. She walks the line between right and wrong. She is a character with a mysterious background, tough exterior and a soft gooey inside. She's the kind of character I like because she isn't flawless but she's perfect. Her snarky attitude and ability to get out of jams amuses me. She may dabble in the criminal side but she does have a code she abides. Her contradictory personality is what makes her complex and interesting. She is not the only interesting character in this story. The secretive DĂșl, from the Shadow Court is delicious. He is a male who works best in the shadows with good reason.

The world building in this book is lighter than I prefer. There…

Review: White Hot

White Hot by Ilona Andrews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

White Hot is aptly name. Buy this book, it is a must read. This follows up right after the first book and it is explosively fast and riveting. Nevada's thrust into the world of Primes continues in this book. Rather than keep a low profile in the PI world, she become embroiled in House war conflicts. Against her better judgment and because she owes Augustine, she takes Cornelius on as a client. He may not be from a high up house, but he still is part of the elite world with influence. When he is turned away from every avenue to seek justice, he goes to Nevada for help. His wife is dead and her employer refuses to acknowledge their part in her death. With no where to turn to find his wife's killer, Nevada agrees to take on the case. This leads her right back into Rogan's territory as she is literally flung into his arms.

I loved this book. I have read it now at least twenty times if not more. Nevada and Rogan are from two di…

Review: For the Bear's Eyes Only

For the Bear's Eyes Only by Kathy Lyons
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Alan is the moody angry bear, literally. I liked Alan. He gives so much to the pack and when he needed them, he is let down so badly. I can understand Alan because he is left out of both worlds. He is a bear shifter but he can't shift so he isn't really one of them. Yet he can not be with humans fully because he is part shifter. Straddling this line where neither worlds will accept him is hard and disheartening. His character is the easiest for readers who have been excluded from a "club" to empathize with. They way he is under appreciated is maddening and it is amazing he even wants to have anything to do with his so called family. When a terrible violation is perpetrated against him and he can finally shift and become part of the "club" through essentially a blood sacrifice, he is now welcome with open arms.

It is interesting to see how become a shifter allows him to be fully accepted in …

With a Prince by Jeffe Kennedy Cover Reveal

@jeffekennedy #coverreveal gorgeous cover for a delicious new book
The guy on the train is just Marcia’s type. A face like an angel, a scent like raw honey, treats her like he has a white horse and suit of armor stowed in his messenger bag. Perfect.
Too perfect. No guy like that would be interested in prim, awkward Marcia, notorious goody-goody and a twentysomething still clutching her v-card. She’s been following rules her whole life—but somewhere, the game changed. And left her behind.
So when she meets Damien, with his rumbling motorbike, gleaming piercings, and wicked imagination, she doesn’t care that he’s the exact opposite of “her type.” Her type would never dare her into such shocking, fiendishly inventive adventures—and she can’t wait to say yes.
Yes to whiskey in the middle of a workday. Yes to letting her hands roam over his body from the back of his bike. Yes to a fling full of wild abandon and absolutely no long-term potential. Except Damien’s not just the straightforward…

Review: The Darkest Promise

The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tortured falls for melancholy only to be transformed into something miraculous. The latest book in this Series is just as dark and depressing as the previous ones. For those who have not read the previous books, this book can be read as a standalone. Ms. Showalter does an excellent job of re-capping the events up to date. She also creates a deeply moving story of two lost souls.

Cameo is one of the few women who are part of the Lords of the Underworld. She is literally cursed with the demon Misery. Just her voice or even a small hum from her can elicit a suicidal spiral. One would think the strongest are those who are happy and joyful. Not so, just her presence will suck the joie de vivre from everyone. This is everyone except Lazarus. Lazarus is known as the Cruel and Unusual king in the realm of Grimm and Fantica. He also has a past with Cameo she can not remember.

Both Cameo and Lazarus are characters mired in angst. The…

Review: Kink 101

Kink 101 by Ines Johnson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

KINK 101 follows a young twenty-something debutante exploring her sexuality. Her world of high society, backstabbing frenemies is just waiting to watch her fall. Instead of playing into this world, she decides to take control of her life and step away from their judging eyes. Since her loser ex-boyfriend rejected her sexual needs, Claire ventures into a BDSM club, Black Dahlia, to see what she is missing. This new world is frightening yet exciting. When she meets another newbie, she finds her partner in crime.

This story starts out slow. I nearly put this book down because it dragged on. I felt this way because I am a jaded BDSM reader. The beginning of this story caters to new-to-BDSM readers. The title does suggest this is a 101 training story. From a BDSM accuracy standpoint, it is close to what one would find in a real BDSM club. Many clubs do offer classes with the explosion of new-to-BDSM kinksters searching to learn more about th…

Review: Dirty Irish

Dirty Irish by Sara Brookes
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An alpha male submissive is a rare sighting, something Natalie knows quite well. Natalie is a dominant who delights in sexual erotic tortures. The last submissive she wanted to commit herself to only broke her heart. Gun shy about relationships and long term play partners, Natalie goes through the motions with little interest. On top of this, her brother is denying her repeated requests to see him. Still, she loves him and remembers him from when they were young. Hiring an attorney to help him is the least she can do. At odds with the most important men in her life is utterly soul crushing. Thankfully with a few friends and her new motorcycle family, she is going to drink herself through St. Patrick's day. Unlucky for her, the submissive she loved, McKinley, shows back up to ruin her carefree fun.

I enjoy femdom books where the female dominant is a sexually sadist who tempers each punishing torment with a loving smile. Natalie is…

Review: Enticement

Enticement by Sierra Cartwright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Get ready to be swept off your feet and then tossed to the side. Rinse and repeat. Ella Gibson is a woman on a mission. She is going to find her Mr. Right and this time, he is going to come complete with whips and chains. Ella goes to a BDSM club to find her perfect dominant. Her slight scent of desperation attracts the sharks. Lucky for her, Pierce catches wind of this and takes her under his wing.

Ella's relationship with Pierce is complicated. He is her best friend's brother who has watched over her as an awkward teen. Her crush on him never completely abated as she grew up. When Pierce offers to be her dominant, she is mixed. Pierce exudes alpha male pheromones and attitude. Maybe too much for Ella who is also headstrong. Pierce is also an experienced dominant. There is just something about Pierce that makes Ella weak in the knees.

I loved Pierce. His is the kind of dominant who turns me on to no end. With a military …

Review: Shifting Darkness

Shifting Darkness by Kate Wendley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tortured, isolated and clueless, Vince fights to be able to function every day. His body is weak and fights him. From an outsider looking in, Vince could be a person with muscular dystrophy.  Not so. Instead, he is a werejaguar who is unable to shift into his animal form. His health is slowly deteriorating. With just him and his mom, they are barely surviving on the little bit of money they can earn. I have been waiting for this book to come out. This book can be read as a standalone. It is better to be read in the series order to better appreciate the relationships between the secondary characters. It is not necessary as Ms. Wendley does a nice job of quick summaries to bring a new reader up to speed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story because I liked Vince. Unlike the other characters in this series, Vince's situation is a losing battle. The difference is because Vince is truly without a community. He only has his mother fo…

Faking it by Christine d'Abo Blog Tour

@riptidebooks Faking it by @Christine_dAbo mmm goodness

Hello, my name is Christine d’Abo and I’m so happy to be here today.
I’m a firm believer that the good friends are the family members that we get to choose. The get us on a level that sometimes our biological family doesn’t. When I came up with the idea of Ringside Gym and the men who were involved with it, I wanted to make sure that their relationships reflected that feeling.
Max would be the “middle” child of the trio of heroes. He’s my peacemaker, the one who wants to make sure everyone and everything is okay. But Max has a problem – he doesn’t know what to do when he’s not needed. Zack no longer needs him now that he has Noland in his life, and their other friend Eli has been MIA due to his MMA career. Max’s life begins to drift and he questions not only what he wants, but also who he wants in it.
When Grady Barnes shows up on the scene, Max is equal parts intrigued and annoyed. Here is a man who seems to have it all, but is seem…
