Review: Warlock's Pawn
Warlock's Pawn by Tara Quan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
One of the best debut books I’ve read in a long time. Hopefully this is just is just a first in a series. Ms. Quan is a dynamite erotic paranormal romance writer. Being a pawn has never been so sexy. Alia, a royal fae, willingly saves a warlock who can easily be the death of her. The warlock in question, Duncan is an alpha male with Dom undertones.
The world Ms. Quan creates is marvelous. The mix of magic and fae is enchanting. The characters are rich and likeable. What is admirable is even the “evil” villains in this story are not fully evil. Ms. Quan shows a side to them which makes their psychotic behaviour understandable and at times makes a reader pity them. The main characters are phenomenal.
Alia may be a sheltered priestess in some ways, yet she is no weak willed victim. She’s soft, feminine and strong. This mix is very sexy and appealing. It’s easy to see why she captivates Duncan. Duncan’s white knight syndrome is romantic. He’s a sexually aggressive man who at heart is a softie. He also happens to be a knight with dented armour. What is most frustrating for him is his inability to protect and save Alia. The way Ms. Quan partners this accomplished knight with a tough princess is pure bliss. It reminds me of one of my favourite reinterpretation of Cinderella. Just like in Ever After, Duncan is always one step behind Alia when it comes to saving her.
The erotic scenes in this book are arousing. Even the gang banging only turns up the heat. My favourite scene is the public deflowering of Alia’s virginity. If my first time was like this, I’d be in cloud nine.
This is a sweet story mixed with some gritty cruelty. It’s a dichotomy which Ms. Quan blends together so well. This book is highly recommend for paranormal lovers who want an extra kinky kick.
