Review: Second Time Lucky
Second Time Lucky by Ethan Day
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Third time's the charm. Fortunately for Luke Landon, he doesn't need a third time. Instead, he gets lucky the second time around with his former college lover, Owen West. A chance meeting with Owen when Luke is at his emotional lowest point is just what Luke needs.
This is a classic Mr. Day story filled with snark, wit, drama and romance. Every book I've read of Mr. Day shows he is a romantic. This story is another testament to his dream for two lovers finding their happily ever after. And true to Mr. Day's writing style, he doesn't make it easy for them.
While the characters are different than his Sno Ho series, the formula is a bit similar and it works so well. Luke and Owen live in different states and there are complications. Owen still lives with his cheating ex-lover. Luke, who seems all together, actually harbors a deep Daddy abandonment issue which affects his life without him acknowledging it.
While this could be a drama queen-filled story with slutty sex, it's not. Instead, it's passionate love between two men who were always meant to be. In addition, there is a maturing of Luke as he faces some hurtful pains from this past. It's not all rainbow and unicorns. The rekindled fire between Owen and Luke is not enough to make a solid relationship. This time around, they need to open up and truly share their lives with each other. This is more than just family and friends getting to know each other. It's understanding what each other wants and sharing their fears and hopes.
And this is what makes Mr. Day's stories so good to read. He creates believable characters with realistic shit hitting the fan situations followed with convincing responses from his characters. This engages the reader and tugs on their heartstrings.
Mr. Day writes some of the loveliest contemporary romance. There are no white knights, perfect heroes or rich billionaires. Instead, the reader is treated to relate-able characters living lives like the rest of us. And the best part, they overcome their hurts and find their happily ever after.
This sweet book is recommended for the romantic who never gives up hope to find their one.
