The Romance Review

Vampires, shifters, angels and demons, what's not to like about this book? Ms. Ford is a new-to-me author. I dived into the third book in this series without reading the first two books. While not recommended, it is still easy to understand the worldbuilding and get caught up to speed.

Hope Magee is a vampire who is still human. She is looking to make a major change in her life by moving far away from her home. Both her best friend and twin sister have found their mates, who are sexy fallen angels (Grigori), who are one step away from being a demon. They stay true to their angelic roots by finding a heart-mate. Hope believes one of the Grigori is her mate, but he constantly repudiates her.

Zeke treats Hope in the worst of ways. He does this through a misguided promise he made centuries ago. Circumstances forces Zeke to take Hope as his heart-mate. From there, a series of unfortunate misunderstandings occur. Death by a ten thousand paper cuts is more painful than a quick shot to the head. Zeke's treatment of Hope is appalling and callously torturous.

The worldbuilding here is similar to many paranormal romances involving fallen angels. Ms. Ford adds her own little touches, but it really isn't too different. This is both good and bad. Good because it's easy to understand and follow the story. Bad because it isn't unique enough to be memorable.

The characters are straightforward. They aren't complex. Zeke is the standard issue alpha male who can't communicate effectively to save his life. He's clueless on basic social skills. Hope is the typical heroine who loves a man who unintentionally cuts her to the quick over and over again. She's the kicked puppy with doleful eyes who constantly seeks affection.

The connecting thread between each of these books in the series is well done and does keep a reader's attention. It also encourages a reader to want to read the next book to uncover the mystery. Overall, this book is well-written and an enjoyable read. Recommended for diehard vampire lovers who love thick headed alpha males.
