Review: Eye of the Eagle

Eye of the Eagle Eye of the Eagle by Sharon Buchbinder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ms. Buchbinder is a must read author. Anytime her name pops up, I immediately grab the book to read. For those who enjoy paranormal with a bit of suspense, Ms. Buchbinder is an excellent author to read. Her worlds are comfortably familiar with a refreshing twist. Her characters are well written and what pulls a reader to her books.

In this latest book in the series, I'm riveted learning more about Bert Blackfeather and this his covert paranormal world. This is the 3rd book in the series and can easily be a standalone. For those who need the background on secondary characters in this book, reading the first two books is recommended.

Bert is an admirable man. He could have let his life go after serving his country and losing his legs. Instead, he plows forward with just as much determination in this special covert government group. As the head of the psychic group, he keeps a low profile. This is harder to do than one thinks, when a new boss comes into town and wants to learn every bit of what he does. Resistant to meddling, Bert is sure he will be able to bore the new boss to death and have her move on. This is until he meets the beautiful and mysterious Phoebe Wagner.

The sparks fly between the two, not just because they start out on opposing sides. The sexual chemistry is strong and I like it. I find boss to subordinate romances to be sexy most times. This time, it definitely is hot. This story is more than just an illicit romance based on "authority". The suspense of a child kidnapped reveals more about this paranormal world. In addition, it is a journey of redemption for Phoebe who is dealing with guilt and loss. These relatable situations makes this story easier to follow and understand. The responses from the two characters based on their past experiences also makes the story more powerful.

From an emotion standpoint, this story is strong. The characters are well crafted and provide an interesting pull/push dynamic. What does need a bit stronger writing is the plot. I found the plot to be a bit farfetched at times. I see Ms. Buchbinder's potential with each new book she publishes. I am confident that within the next few books, her plots will become more substantial and assist in her world building. This will help her books become more layered and complex. Overall, this is a smooth read and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who enjoy suspense and psychic themes.

* I received this book as an arc. No review was required, I wrote one anyway.
