Chapter 5
By the time Catalina reached the lobby of the office building that housed Lark & LeClair, she was a little winded, tense with anger and vibrating with anxiety.
Daniel was already behind his desk. He took one look at her when she came through the door and got to his feet.
āAre you all right?ā he asked.
āIām fine. Has there been any word from Olivia?ā
āNo.ā Daniel frowned. āShould there be some word from her?ā
Catalina glanced at the clock. āIn another five minutes sheāll be late. Sheās never late.ā
Daniel raised his brows. āThe hot date, remember? Sheās probably having a late breakfast with Mr. Perfect.ā
āProbably,ā Catalina said.
Daniel exhaled slowly. āYou think somethingās wrong, donāt you?ā
āOlivia knows I would be worried about her by now,ā Catalina said. āShe should have checked in. Sheās not answering her phone. Iām going to call Ferris.ā
āI can apologize later.ā
Emerson Ferris answered on the fourth ring. He sounded groggy; maybe hungover. Maybe angry. Whatever the case, it was clear from his first words that he was not in a good moodācertainly not in the mood one would expect from a man who had spent the night with a lover.
āNo, Olivia isnāt here,ā he growled. āWho the hell is this?ā
āCatalina Lark, her friend and business partner. Weāve met a few times, remember?ā
āOh, yeah, I remember you. Well, you can tell your friend and business partner that I got the message. But, shit, she could have texted me to say itās over. She didnāt have to ghost me. I spent half the day on that meal and she didnāt even bother to let me know that she wasnāt going to make it. I thought she cared. I was so wrong about her.ā
Catalina stopped breathing. She clutched the phone so tightly it was a wonder the device didnāt shatter.
āAre you saying Olivia didnāt show up at all last night?ā she whispered.
āYeah, thatās exactly what Iām saying.ā Emerson paused. āWhy? Do you know something I donāt know?ā
āNo,ā Catalina said. āI donāt, and thatās got me scared half to death.ā
āWhat the hell?ā Sudden alarm erased the growl in Emersonās voice. āWhereās Olivia?ā
āI have no idea,ā Catalina said. āWhy do you think I called you? Iām going to hang up now and make some other phone calls.ā
āHoly shit, do you mean youāre going to start calling the hospitals? Do you really think something happened to her?ā
āI just told you, I donāt know,ā Catalina said. āBut something is very wrong. Iāve got to go now. Give me your word that youāll call me if you hear from her.ā
āYeah, sure.ā Emersonās voice sharpened. āIāll get in touch right away. What about her car? Is it gone?ā
āHer car is still in the apartment garage. She said she was going to use a ride-hailing app to go to your place.ā
āMaybe the car service can tell you when they picked her up and where they took her.ā
āTrust me, Iām going to start there.ā
āLet me know what you find out, okay? Call me immediately. Now youāve got me worried, too.ā
āIāll be in touch,ā Catalina said. She hung up the phone and looked at Daniel. āOlivia never showed up at Emerson Ferrisās condo.ā
Daniel reached for his own phone. āIāll call the hospitals,ā he said. āYou deal with the ride-hailing company.ā
Twenty minutes later they both put down their phones. Catalina had to fight to suppress the raw panic that was eating her up inside. āThe car service guy says Olivia canceled the pickup,ā she managed, trying to maintain a semblance of calm. āI called all of her other friends. No one saw her last night.ā
āThe hospitals have no record of admitting anyone by that name,ā Daniel reported. āWhat in the world is going on? Itās not like Olivia to just up and vanish.ā
āNo, itās not,ā Catalina said. She grabbed her coat and handbag and headed for the door. āYou stay here and start going through the morning news reports. Youāre looking for anything that happened in the Seattle downtown area last night. Car accidents. Fires. Shootings. Robberies. Kidnappings. Anything.ā
