Thanks to Berkley Publishing and Netgalley, they gave me the opportunity to read this fantastic new series from talented Ms. Krentz.  Check out my review here.  The book is out today, January 7, 2020.  Below is an exciting excerpt.

Chapter 5

By the time Catalina reached the lobby of the office building that housed Lark & LeClair, she was a little winded, tense with anger and vibrating with anxiety.

Daniel was already behind his desk. He took one look at her when she came through the door and got to his feet.

ā€œAre you all right?ā€ he asked.

ā€œIā€™m fine. Has there been any word from Olivia?ā€

ā€œNo.ā€ Daniel frowned. ā€œShould there be some word from her?ā€

Catalina glanced at the clock. ā€œIn another five minutes sheā€™ll be late. Sheā€™s never late.ā€

Daniel raised his brows. ā€œThe hot date, remember? Sheā€™s probably having a late breakfast with Mr. Perfect.ā€

ā€œProbably,ā€ Catalina said.

Daniel exhaled slowly. ā€œYou think somethingā€™s wrong, donā€™t you?ā€

ā€œOlivia knows I would be worried about her by now,ā€ Catalina said. ā€œShe should have checked in. Sheā€™s not answering her phone. Iā€™m going to call Ferris.ā€

ā€œIā€™m not sure thatā€™s a good idea,ā€ Daniel said.

ā€œI can apologize later.ā€

Emerson Ferris answered on the fourth ring. He sounded groggy; maybe hungover. Maybe angry. Whatever the case, it was clear from his first words that he was not in a good moodā€”certainly not in the mood one would expect from a man who had spent the night with a lover.

ā€œNo, Olivia isnā€™t here,ā€ he growled. ā€œWho the hell is this?ā€

ā€œCatalina Lark, her friend and business partner. Weā€™ve met a few times, remember?ā€

ā€œOh, yeah, I remember you. Well, you can tell your friend and business partner that I got the message. But, shit, she could have texted me to say itā€™s over. She didnā€™t have to ghost me. I spent half the day on that meal and she didnā€™t even bother to let me know that she wasnā€™t going to make it. I thought she cared. I was so wrong about her.ā€

Catalina stopped breathing. She clutched the phone so tightly it was a wonder the device didnā€™t shatter.

ā€œAre you saying Olivia didnā€™t show up at all last night?ā€ she whispered.

ā€œYeah, thatā€™s exactly what Iā€™m saying.ā€ Emerson paused. ā€œWhy? Do you know something I donā€™t know?ā€

ā€œNo,ā€ Catalina said. ā€œI donā€™t, and thatā€™s got me scared half to death.ā€

ā€œWhat the hell?ā€ Sudden alarm erased the growl in Emersonā€™s voice. ā€œWhereā€™s Olivia?ā€

ā€œI have no idea,ā€ Catalina said. ā€œWhy do you think I called you? Iā€™m going to hang up now and make some other phone calls.ā€

ā€œHoly shit, do you mean youā€™re going to start calling the hospitals? Do you really think something happened to her?ā€

ā€œI just told you, I donā€™t know,ā€ Catalina said. ā€œBut something is very wrong. Iā€™ve got to go now. Give me your word that youā€™ll call me if you hear from her.ā€

ā€œYeah, sure.ā€ Emersonā€™s voice sharpened. ā€œIā€™ll get in touch right away. What about her car? Is it gone?ā€

ā€œHer car is still in the apartment garage. She said she was going to use a ride-hailing app to go to your place.ā€

ā€œMaybe the car service can tell you when they picked her up and where they took her.ā€

ā€œTrust me, Iā€™m going to start there.ā€

ā€œLet me know what you find out, okay? Call me immediately. Now youā€™ve got me worried, too.ā€

ā€œIā€™ll be in touch,ā€ Catalina said. She hung up the phone and looked at Daniel. ā€œOlivia never showed up at Emerson Ferrisā€™s condo.ā€

Daniel reached for his own phone. ā€œIā€™ll call the hospitals,ā€ he said. ā€œYou deal with the ride-hailing company.ā€

Twenty minutes later they both put down their phones. Catalina had to fight to suppress the raw panic that was eating her up inside. ā€œThe car service guy says Olivia canceled the pickup,ā€ she managed, trying to maintain a semblance of calm. ā€œI called all of her other friends. No one saw her last night.ā€

ā€œThe hospitals have no record of admitting anyone by that name,ā€ Daniel reported. ā€œWhat in the world is going on? Itā€™s not like Olivia to just up and vanish.ā€

ā€œNo, itā€™s not,ā€ Catalina said. She grabbed her coat and handbag and headed for the door. ā€œYou stay here and start going through the morning news reports. Youā€™re looking for anything that happened in the Seattle downtown area last night. Car accidents. Fires. Shootings. Robberies. Kidnappings. Anything.ā€
