Review: Starbreaker

Starbreaker (Endeavor, #2)Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Buckle your seat belt, strap on your helmet and brace for a wild ride. The follow up book to the Endeavor series is packed with action, big reveals and heartbreak. This series must be read in the order it was written for the best experience. This is not a standalone story.

This book picks up right after the last book ends. Our pucky heroine, Tess is still thumbing her nose at her tyrant father. She is still at odds with her uncle whom she loved as a child but grew up to hate when he separated himself from her to save her life. Whilst she is still trying to sort out her Daddy issues, her love life with Shade becomes complicated when her long lost lover reappears. Plus, her crew is short on money and supplies so they do a "run" which creates even more of a tangled mess. There are several plots with subplots simultaneously blowing up around Tess. This may seem a bit overwhelming and could come across as a confusing hot mess. Instead, Ms. Bouchet creates an intricate tale weaving in the past to the present. It is masterfully done as pieces of Tess's memory are re-examined and redefined. This includes her relationships and her place in the resistance.

Several unexplained situations and actions of others become abundantly clear as Tess learns more about the pivotal figures in her life. When she is forced to go on a rescue mission, the vast danger the entire universe is in shocks her. Ms. Bouchet pulls no punches. It is one proverbial hit after another for Tess. She does not get a break and this helps build a sense of exhaustion and hopelessness. This added tension creates a good suspense in the story keeps a reader turning the page to see what will happen next. Some of the events are surprising because I did not expect Ms. Bouchet to so quickly reach to this point confrontation and loss. The ending is a bit anti-climactic and still leaves several issues unresolved. It isn't a cliffhanger ending but it does hook a reader in and wanting the next book soon. This space opera is highly recommended to readers who root for the underdog.
