Velvet Cruelty by Eve Dangerfield
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sex, violence, kidnapping, betrayals, and death abound in this book.  Looking for a dark read paying homage to Snow White?  Check out the first in the series from Ms. Dangerfield.  This writing style is different for Ms. Dangerfield and I can only assume it is because she is writing in the Midnight Dynasty world which is an established world written by a coalition of authors.  What impresses me most is how consistent each of the authors is staying in tone, feel, darkness and character.  Each of these books and sub-series contains different characters from the same main three families.  Watching what filthy rich do to each other is fascinating.

Ms. Dangerfield usually writes sweet if sometimes quirky or annoying characters who grow over the course of the book.  There is romance and conflict.  Whilst these two points are still here in her book, perhaps the only character who is closer to a Ms. Dangerfield character would be Basher.  His shy awkwardness juxtaposed with his sexual deviance and his ability to kill is nicely done.

This story is filled with sexual malice as well as cock teasing.  There is a backstory that is not revealed in its entirety which explains the cruelty of the four men towards January. I was a little surprised at some of the sex scenes in here and it has been a long time since I saw non-con gunplay.  The sexual tension between January and the men is off the charts and I love it.  I get why she is avoiding losing her virginity.  The fact that the guys cannot figure it out is perplexing.

This erotic romance is recommended to readers who like it dark and dubious.
